How To Fix Warning Could Not Start Excel Server For Export In A Mac

-->

Note

Office 365 ProPlus is being renamed to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. For more information about this change, read this blog post.

Symptoms

When you create a hyperlink in an Office document and then select the link, you may receive one of these error messages:

Export

Unable to open <URL>. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server.

Unable to open <URL>. Cannot open the specified file.

<URL> = the hyperlink you inserted.

Note

  • Things got better as new versions of Windows came out. We went from an old, limited, file system to something called the New Technology File System (NTFS). NTFS took us to a point where a filename could be 255 characters long, and the file path length could potentially go up to 32,767 characters.
  • And I got errors like the following: Warning: Could not start Excel server for import, 'basic' mode will be used. Refer to HELP XLSREAD for more information. I found the following related post. How do you use xlsread with MATLAB and OS X? But the matlab I am using is R2014b. It should be able to work, isnot it?

I've been having some quite annoying problems dealing with the Export to Excel functionality on a SharePoint 2016 farm. It simply does not work. I have an Office Online server installed also. Basically I click the Export to Excel, it prompts 'Do you want to open or save owssvr.iqy from. I click open.

The hyperlink does work if you type it directly in the browser or in the Open box of the Run dialog box (select Start, and then select Run).

Cause

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Internet Explorer:

    • As a proxy server -or-
    • With a firewall that does not allow HTTP requests to be placed on your local network
  • Internet Explorer is not your default browser.

  • The ForceShellExecute registry key is not present in the following location or is not set to 1:

    • For 32-bit versions of office installed on 64-bit operating systems:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonInternet

    • For 32-bit versions of Office installed on 32-bit operating systems or 64-bit versions of Office installed on 64-bit operating systems:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonInternet

Workaround

Important

This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, select the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Add the Internet Subkey to the registry and set the Value data

To work around this issue, either add the ForceShellExecute subkey, if it is not present, and set the Value data, or if it is present, set the Value data of the ForceShellExecute subkey.

  1. Quit any programs that are running.

  2. Select Start, and then select Run. Type regedit in the Open box, and then select OK.

  3. In Registry Editor, browse to one of the following subkeys (create the keys if they do not exist):

    • For a 32-bit version of Office on a 64-bit version of Windows:

Windows password recovery tool ultimate full version. *HKLMSOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonInternet*

    • For a 32-bit version of Office on a 32-bit version of Windows:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonInternet

    • For a 64-bit version of Office on a 64-bit version of Windows:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonInternet

  4. Make sure the Internet subkey is selected. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then select DWORD Value. Add the following registry value:

    Value Name: ForceShellExecute

  5. Double-click ForceShellExecute, and then set the Value data to 1. Select OK.

  6. On the Registry menu, select Exit.

How

More Information

A hyperlink may not go to a Microsoft Word document or a Microsoft Excel worksheet after you use this workaround.

Brightness not changing windows 10. Office uses the Urlmon.dll file to handle all Internet transitions.

In this case, the Urlmon.dll file sends a request to get a file via http:// through the proxy server. The proxy server sees that the request came from Internet Explorer, based upon the HTTP User Agent field of the http://request. It then gives an error 403, basically saying 'Access Denied.'

The Urlmon.dll file gets this and simply returns the error message mentioned earlier. The error means that the request failed, but it never states why it failed.

The workaround is to use a ShellExecute() on the URL. This allows the operating system to start the URL on the default browser. If the default browser is not restricted by the proxy server, the proper page is displayed.

When using MS Excel document or MS Access that assimilate functions or buttons which need VBA (Visual Basic Applications) for the Macros to perform some assigned task, the user may get a compilation error 'Can’t find project or library'.

Part 1: What is the cause of this Error?

  • This error is usually caused by the user's MS Access or MS Excel program. The reason is that the program has a reference to an object or type of library which is missing and hence not found by the program. Accordingly, the program cannot use VB or Micro based functions or buttons. Therefore an error message is sent.
  • Sometimes a library may be toggled on or toggled off causing a missing link between the library and program code. So the compilation error is issued.
  • Since there are standard libraries so missing library sounds a bit of the least chance. The other possible reason, in that case, is that library miss-match is the cause of the error. For example, the user may have a library (sat Outlook) version of 2007 but the reference in the code may be looking for the 2010 version of that specific library. So the program fails to find the corresponding library thus issuing this compilation error.
  • Another scenario for the same error message is concerning the use of Microsoft XP which includes a reference to web service in the VBA project. When you run this project in MS Office 2003, the same compilation error appears. The reason is the same i.e. object or type of library is missing (or not found).

Part 2: How to Repair Corrupt Excel File

For different situations, some solutions to rectify the problem or to repair corrupted Excel files are always there. Like finding out the missing library or the cause of mismatch if it exists. The library is then added or the code may be rechecked to link to the appropriate library.

How can it be done?

Step 6. As in above display if check mark exists with the missing library, uncheck it and click OK
